Chance of Drawing Exactly One Black in 8 Trials
INTRODUCTION
THE GAME OF SKILLS & WAIFU
Hello new captain, and welcome to a beginner's guide on Honkai Impact 3. It is indeed quite rare to find gems among pay-to-win mobile games these days. Honkai Impact is definitely not one of those pay-to-win games… Even if you pay, you might not even have the luck to get better weapons and stuff.
Winning still takes some skill and patience, which is why I wrote this guide to share some tips. Also, please note that Mihoyo throws in some updates pretty frequently, you might find some of these tips outdated over time, but the basics should remain the same. Hopefully.

SECTION A
TIPS & STRATEGIES
In this first section of the guide, I shall throw in some of my random tips on leveling up, gameplay, and stuff that I really should have done from the start…
TIP 1) HOW TO LEVEL UP FAST
New captains, your valkyries can only level up to as much as your captain level. If you want more exciting gameplay, then level up fast. It is not exactly that difficult, and all you need to do is to clear the main storyline. The first few episodes should be a walk in the park, and clearing every stage will give you additional experience points in the achievements.
TIP 2) COMPLETE THE TUTORIAL
Please do go through and complete the beginner tutorials – They cost 0 stamina and gives you free gems!
TIP 3) BIO > PSYCHIC > MECHA
Bio types deal more damage to Psychic-types, Psychic trumps Mecha, and Mecha trumps creatures. That is the magic formula that you have to remember for this game. While you don't always have to follow it, this does make the game a little easier.
TIP 4) COMPLETE THE DAILY TASKS
Seriously, try to complete as many of the daily quests as possible. These are literally freebies, and it includes gems. Don't be afraid to use gems to purchase coins as well, it will give you 15 daily duty points. So if your daily duty is already 135, feel free to top it up with a coin purchase – That will unlock the 150 daily duty points reward, giving you back 15 gems and even more goodies.
TIP 5) JOIN AN ARMADA
Don't be shy. Once you unlock the Arama feature, go find one and join. Because joining an Armada will open up more gameplay for you:
- You can contribute to the armada, get ranger reputation that can be used in the shop for useful materials and even gacha tickets.
- If the Armada leader and members are not lazy, you can join in the daily boss fight – With a chance to get even more reputation plus gems.
- Unlock more daily Armada quests and rewards.
- If you are short on certain upgrade materials and/or shop purchase materials, you can ask for help in the Armada.
TIP 6) SAVE YOUR GEMS
Don't waste your gems on a single gacha. Save up to 2800 instead and it will give you guaranteed at least "Rank A" drops.
TIP 7) UPGRADE YOUR BASE
Don't neglect your base, especially the character specific buildings. If you level them up enough, they will give you whopping passive character stat bonuses.
TIP 8) TAKE TIME TO FARM CHARACTER FRAGMENTS
This game is boring if you only have a few characters to choose from. Trust me, the fun comes in later when you have enough characters to play various possible combinations. While the gacha is one way to unlock them, the other faster way is to play some of the hard/supreme stages, as they do drop character fragments.
When you clear the stages once, you can then "automatically" farm it daily through expedition battles. If you are lucky, that should get you 2-4 character fragments a day. That means you can probably unlock a character with 30 fragments within just 2 weeks.
TIP 9) PATIENCE IS THE KEY
As with any other mobile games, you will need to grind. Once you unlock the hard/supreme stages, you will get stages that drop character fragments plus imaginary cores. If you concentrate on a single character fragment and get lucky, you should be able to unlock a character with 30 fragments in less than 2 weeks.
The imaginary core though… At the current version, you will need 150 of them to unlock a 5 stars stigma or weapon. That means nearly an entire month. 😐 But hey, it's a free game, and you get to play on the same level of paid players without spending a single cent.
SECTION B
WHERE TO FARM
The good part of Houkai 3 is that you can actually get past without "pay-to-win"… Or should I say, you cannot get the good stuff instantly even if you pay. Yep, it takes time, but you should be able to unlock all the good characters and weapons with some patience.
FARMING GOLD COINS
In the early parts of the game, you will probably not run into any trouble with gold coins, until things get gnarly at level 50+. Just leveling up the skills of the girls can easily wipe out a million coins in a flash… and not even max it out. Plus, you have to level up stigmas and weapons. Yep, getting gold coins can be quite a pain in the late game, as there are only limited ways to get so many coins:
- Aim for the Homi/Homu treasures in the open world (Sakura Samsara) quests.
- Save up Planeroid Tokens by not playing the weekday events/experience stages.
- Spam the tokens to open up the gold coin stages during the weekend.
- Exchange gems for coins – Yes, you earn a small number of gems every single day for completing tasks. Just use it once to buy coins.
- Sell the useless materials.
- Leveling up the base refinery will you some extra gold as well.
- Some of the supreme stages drop Homi treasures… Not a guaranteed drop though.
EXPERIENCE
So far, I have not run into the problem of Valkyries leveling up too slowly. Just clear the daily experience stages and use the Exp Chips. What does happen is that the captain level goes up very slowly once past 60. The usual few ways to push the needle up:
- Complete the main storyline – On hard and supreme difficulty mode.
- Level up the base command center – It will give you better quests with more experience and 4 stars material quests.
- Just enjoy the slow leveling… You will need plenty of time to get coins, better equipment, farm materials for upgrades, and level up the skills.
UPGRADE MATERIALS
You can get most upgrade materials from the main story, base command center quests, daily events, or just buy it from the shop.
- Monday – Moon
- Tuesday – Sakura
- Wednesday – Ocean
- Thursday – Tokiwa
- Friday – Lightning
CHARACTER FRAGMENTS
Apart from the gacha, you can also farm the character fragments from the main story stages (minus some of the S-class Valkyries). On the main screen, go Valkyrie – Select Character – Obtain, and that will tell you where to go… You have to first clear the story stage though, and it does take some patience.
5-STARS WEAPONS
The sad part. Some 5 stars weapons can only be unlocked with luck in the gacha. Otherwise, there are a few options:
- Grind in the daily Time Swirl event, the BEFALL stages drops 5 stars weapons randomly.
- Or play the trial stages to farm forging material fragments – As you can guess, is really time-consuming and without 100% guaranteed drop rate.
- Finally, farm Honkai imaginary cores in the story stages and open world. You will need 150 of those to unlock a 5 stars weapon in the forge though.
5-STARS STIGMAS
The other sad part – You can only get some 5 stars stigma by luck in the gacha. But similarly:
- You can farm the stigma fragments and material in the Time Swirl.
- Alternatively, farm Schicksal Imaginary Core in some hard/supreme difficulty stages, plus the open world.
SECTION C
THE CHARACTERS
Ever since Houkai started years ago, they have been quite actively adding more characters and stuff. So please don't be surprised to see that some characters are missing in this section… I will probably try to update this once in a while though.
KIANA KASLANA
-
White Comet (Mech)
Your "default" starting character. Deals a decent amount of damage and has plenty of speed. A good "combo starter" as she kicks the enemy up into the air. An overall above-average character that is good throughout early to mid-game… Her fragments come easily and you can upgrade her to keep up with the game.
-
Valkyrie Ranger (Mech)
The mid-range version of Kiana, but meh, she does peanuts low damage. Maybe good as a supporting character, if you load her up with weapons/stigmas that do all sorts of weird bad status and continuous passive damage. Otherwise, this one is never a choice for boss battles.
-
Divine Prayer (Psychic)
Heals the party as you dodge and burn… Seems to deal a bit more damage than the default White Comet, but can't heal fast enough against bosses in the late game. Still a good Kiana alternative though.
-
Moonbeam Knight (Bio)
The S-class version that whips out a whole lot of damage and dodges fast… I mean, she will trigger ultimate evasion even if you get the timing wrong. Yep, that is her passive skill, and 999% very useful in completing missions that require you to dodge.
-
Herrsher (Bio)
The best ranged massive AOE damage dealer. Period. Pair this one up with Celestial Hymn, and they are unstoppable.
KALLEN KASLANA
-
Imayoh Ritual (Mech)
This is the awakened form of White Comet, making it "worth it" to level up the default Kiana. Fast attack rate, dodge speed, and her ultimate skill can place multiple turrets – On top of Teresa's deployed cross. Can stack up and dish out quite a massive DPS when paired with Teresa.
-
Sundenjager (Mech)
The healer version of Kallen, but the healing only activate upon evasion and under 30% HP… Which makes me not-so-sure, along with her not-so-good DPS. Leader skill boosts the attack speed of Mech types, which is kind of useful though.
-
Sixth Serenade (Psychic)
I love this one. Dishes out a ton of elemental ice damage, and even her leader skill further boosts elemental damage. Pair her up with characters and stigma that further boost attack speed and elemental damage… She will be one insane elemental damage DPS monster.
RAIDEN MEI
-
Crimson Impulse (Bio)
The second "default" starting character. In the first hours of gameplay, she does not seem to deal a lot of damage, but I later realized – Crimson Impulse is one of the best "follow up" for White Comet – Launch the enemy up into the air, let Crimson Impulse slash up mid-air, then finish off with her ultimate. But well, she is only an overall decent character from early to mid-game.
-
Valkyrie Bladestrike (Bio)
Another one of my favorite characters. In the early game, Bladestrike can seem a little useless with low damage, short range, and her attacks are easily interrupted. But pair her up with Yamabuki Armor, and beef up her attack speed/critical rate – You get another massive DPS monster with insane hit count.
-
Shadow Dash (Mech)
Shadow dash requires a bit of skill and timing. The whole point of this character is to dodge/backstab the enemy and not to go head on… Which is very useful against enemies that are immune to front attacks. She does generate shadow clones that attack too, which is a bonus.
-
Lightning Empress (Psychic)
The S-Class Mei that is fast and deals a lot of damage. Her passive skill is not really that fantastic for certain stages, giving additional SP at the start of the stage… But when you have a whole team of psychic characters, she adds a significant 20% boost to attack.
YAE SAKURA
-
Gyakushinn Miko (Bio)
Sakura is one character that has well rounded HP, attack, defense, and dodge… but is pretty hard to play. No, you don't just smash the attack button. You mark the enemies with sakura brands, dodge around to counterattack, press-and-hold the attack button to do a dash attack, and unleash her ultimate to explode the brands.
-
Flame Sakitama (Bio)
This is a variation that deals a lot of fire elemental damage. Again, no button mashing, you will need to time the attacks and combos.
-
Goushinnsou Memento (Mech)
An icy version Sakura that deals AOE ice damage. Restores HP on successful dodge and kills… Kind of useful like Kiana's Divine Prayer.
BRONYA ZAYCHIK
-
Valkyrie Chariot ( Psychic )
The default Bronya is meh. Her long-range weapon does not deal enough damage, leader skills only reduce ranged damage and her ultimate creates a black hole to suck enemies in… Which may still be kind of useful if you pair it with Teresa for AOE attacks.
-
Yamabuki Armor (Psychic)
One of my favorites, a perfect support character. While Armor does not deal a lot of damage, she shields the entire team – Making your attacks uninterruptable until the shield breaks. In the late game, you can beef up her defense, making the shield extremely hard to break. As a leader, she adds a whopping 20% critical rate chance… Also 20% additional critical damage to psychic characters.
-
Wolf's Dawn (Psychic)
Wolf's Dawn is the awakened form of Armor, and pretty much shares the same skillset as Armor. But instead of absorbing physical damage, Wolf's Dawn absorbs elemental damage. What is useful about Wolf's Dawn is that even when Bronya is switched out, project bunny remains behind as a sidekick for a few seconds.
-
Snowy Sniper (Bio)
This is another support Bronya that I quite like. Her leader skill reduces the cooldown time of evasions – Giving your damage dealing characters more chances to deal even more damage. Her ultimate also freezes all the nearby enemies for good… But as you guess – Some bosses are immune to freeze, not really a good boss fight character.
-
Black Nucleus (Bio)
The awakened form of Snowy Sniper. Bronya is mostly built as a support character, but this S-class Black Nucleus is built to dish out punishment… This one is kind of like the Bronya version of Shadow Dash.
-
Dimension Break (Mech)
Dimension Break is yet another support character, with a leader skill that gives a 25% boost to SP gain. Pair her up with Moonbeam, Lightning Empress, and/or any Teresa to serve out crazy AOE damages. Fast.
THERESA APOCALYPSE
-
Valkyrie Pledge (Psychic)
The default Theresa. Not very useful as a leader, but she does deal some decently good mid-range AOE damage. Use her to control crowds in early to mid-game. In the late game, Valkyrie Pledge is just too squishy and does not quite deal enough damage.
-
Sakura Rondo (Psychic)
An alternate Theresa built to deal out massive elemental damage to a single enemy – Fire damage in particular. As a leader, she will also boost the elemental damage of the team if all 3 are of different types. Use Sakura Rondo to take down Mecha bosses fast.
-
Violet Executer (Mech)
If you manage to even get this, you are in luck. Violet Executer is the Super Saiyan Loli of Houkai 3. All she does is to dish out massive damage. Leader skill, increase damage. Active the cross, increase damage. Ultimate skill, insane damage. Pair her up with Bronya, giver her shields, boost her critical rate, and… apocalypse.
-
Celestial Hymn (Bio)
The much more powerful S-class version of Valkyrie Pledge. By powerful, I mean insane. The ultimate of Celestial Hymn draw enemies into a kill zone much like Bronya, but on top of that, you can deploy Theresa's cross in the kill zone to beef it up even more… Then you stack it up with Kallen's turrets and watch them burn.
-
Kuna Kindred (Bio)
Kind of like an alternate Terri. Short tap to do quick attacks, long tap for heavy attacks. She does absorb and recover some HP… But still a squishy character nonetheless.
MURATA HIMEKO
-
Battle Storm (Bio)
The default Himeko is a tank that has slow but powerful attacks. Press-and-hold to unleash her charged attacks, good for breaking slow shielded enemies… But otherwise, she is too slow against the fast-moving mob. Her leader skills are kind of useful in boosting defense.
-
Valkyrie Triumphant (Bio)
A Himeko centered around damage. Adds plenty of attack bonus as a leader, and her attacks are faster than the default Battle Storm. The Blade Storm ultimate also creates a kill zone that is extremely powerful when paired up with other ultimate AOE, such as Celestial Hymn.
-
Scarlet Fusion (Mech)
My favorite Himeko build. Deals a ton of damage, additional lighting damage, has a ton of HP, good defense, and decent attack speed – This is your typical "S-grade" tank.
-
Bloody Rose (Psychic)
This is one that I am not too sure of. She does have extremely high DPS, that gets even higher when her HP is low… But her ultimate drains HP fast, which is a double-edged sword. Kind of bad against high-level bosses who don't die with a few hits.
-
Kriegmesser (Psychic)
Young Himeko! In a nutshell – An elemental ice damage tank.
-
Vermillion Knight (Mech)
Can only get through gacha… But this is the only OP Himeko that hits fast and hard.
RITA ROSSWEISSE
-
Unbral Rose (Psychic)
Don't be misunderstood by her "low DPS" at first. The overall strategy is – She hits fast, passively builds up damage on combo hits, add bleed damage, top it up with critical hit rates. Yep – She probably has one of the higher DPS in the game.
-
Phantom Iron (Mech)
Similar to the default Rita. Hits fast, and gains damage on more hit counts. Personally, I kind of like her ultimate, which summons her "good boy" and stays on even when you switch her out. Oh yeah, she does passively increase the elemental damage for the team, even if she is not the leader.
-
Argent Knight (Bio)
The ice version of Rita. Gains damage against frozen enemies, and stacks up nicely with fellow icy characters – Snowy Sniper and Kriegmesser.
FU HUA
-
Valkyrie Accipiter (Psychic)
The default Fu Hua, and overall balanced character – Kind of OK-ish damage, speed, and HP. Her combo attack also heals the party, kind of useful.
-
Night Squire (Bio)
The physical damage version of Fu Hua. But I personally don't quite catch her controls… She is not the easiest character to play.
-
Shadow Knight (Mech)
The lightning elemental damage version of Fu Hua. Does dish out quite a lot of damage, but again, not a huge fan of the controls.
-
Phoenix (Psychic)
The physical-fire elemental damage version of Fu Hua. Not a fan of the controls again.
